Writing for Recovery Classes

I facilitate Writing for Recovery classes on-site at your centre or in venues around the Lower Mainland. I provide curriculum, writing exercises and a safe, respectful environment geared to empower participants to express themselves with confidence and creativity.

These hands-on workshops use creative writing to empower participants to connect with themselves and each other in a dynamic setting. I offer a creative toolbox, direction and support in workshops geared to promote self-empowerment through creative self-expression.

Scientific studies demonstrate that writing plays a significant role in physical and psychological healing. Whether participants choose a twelve-step-based recovery program, a SMART recovery program or another avenue, my classes provide a powerful asset in the journey to recovery.

Workshops are offered on an ongoing basis or one-time-offs. A typical workshop is two hours long with a break.

With over 20 years of experience as an educator, I bring a dual professional background in writing and education to my classes along with insights gleaned from my professional experience as a complementary therapist.

Past and current teaching venues include:

  • Pacifica Treatment Centre
  • Emily Carr University of Art + Design
  • Langara College
  • Vancouver General Hospital
  • Inner city support services
  • Schools
  • Libraries
  • Community centres
  • Prisons

My staff self-empowerment workshops are geared to meet the needs of staff in a professional development or retreat context. I structure my workshops to meet the specific needs of groups and offer one-time or series options.

My Recovery Workshops are offered on a similar basis, can be content-specific depending on client needs and occur on-site at facilities and in venues throughout the Lower Mainland.

Workshop components include some or all of these facets:

  • Themed brainstorming
  • Group writing
  • Guided visualization
  • Creative writing games and exercises
  • Autobiographical expression/journaling
  • Creative nonfiction as a healing genre
  • Group and partner dialogue
  • Optional non-critical sharing of writing
  • Take-away concepts for home practice
  • Contextualization of activities through creativity/empowerment framework

 Engagement

Participants in my workshops are engaged and inspired. They write and create from the heart and demonstrate courage in their willingness to share their creative outpouring with their peers. I am delighted by the considerable capacity for creative engagement demonstrated by participants over the years.

My goal

My goal is to provide structure, concepts and a foundation for participants to learn new skills and tools for self-connection and creative expression.
